“The Magnificent”

I just love the word, ‘Magnificent.’ Say it, and listen as it tumbles through the air like an Olympic acrobat and sticks a landing in your consciousness. I once attended a workshop on breaking through your emotional blocks to live a more fulfilling life, and the facilitator asked us to hold the ‘possibility’ of living a magnificent life in the forefront of our minds. Then he asked us to picture what that ‘magnificence’ looked like. At first I thought about the usual stuff – nice house, loving family, successful work – and then I started seeing the faces of all the amazing role models I’ve known, and realized that Magnificence isn’t about what you have, it’s about who you are.

“Magnificence is The Starry Night of your indomitable spirit, the swirling baseline of your miraculous consciousness, and the luminous sky of your creative potential. You, my friend, are The Magnificent!”

“I don’t know anything with certainty, but seeing the stars makes me dream.”
Vincent van Gogh

So what is The Magnificence? It’s the state of creative flow where we perfectly sync with the moment and fully engage in a highly focused, but incredibly smooth, give & take with the people, places and events that surround us. We embody this flow because it is our nature, no matter how many layers of societal conditioning try to convince us otherwise. So forget that bruised ego and it’s harsh judgements – The Magnificence is the purest expression of our energetic passion.

“May what I do flow from me like a river, no forcing and no holding back, the way it is with children.”
Rainer Maria Rilke

The Drake equation has the odds of intelligent life in the universe at 10 billion trillion, so congratulations, you won the cosmic lottery! And if that sublime windfall isn’t enough, you have the opportunity to turn that cosmically gifted intelligence into The Magnificence with just a few easy perceptual tweaks, a few Quantum Resolutions.

Q uantum Resolutions are promises we make to ourselves that reflect the connected core of our magnificent being, and represent the ‘authentic’ aspirations that form your intellectual, emotional and spiritual action plan. When you activate the plan, these Words of Power summon your Quiet Power, and sync your consciousness up with the universe of possibility, and all you have to do is relax, open your mind, and let your inherent genius make it happen.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Taking a leap with Mehta & Beethoven

The opposite of magnificence is insignificance, and whenever I’m feeling small I practice a little mindfulness to clear the fear. The last time I did, I was surprised when the second movement Allegretto from Beethoven’s 7th Symphony started thrumming through my brain. I continued to meditate, but every time I moved past the music, the movement started again, insisting that I focus my attention on where it’s aural finger was pointing.

“The fates lead him who will, him who won’t they drag.”

I  use mindfulness like Director David Lynch uses Transcendental Meditation (TM), which means everything that shows up is an opportunity for creative exploration. So I sifted through multiple versions of the 7th, found the most emotionally resonant version, and listened to it over and over like a mantra, until my Quantum Resolutions pulsed to the forefront of my consciousness.

“Within your own self is a treasury, an ocean of pure bliss, consciousness, intelligence, creativity, love, happiness, energy, and peace… within every human being. Experience that and you will begin to know yourself, which is unbounded, eternal totality”
― David Lynch

My Quantum Resolutions

Here are the agreements that showed up for me thanks to Ludwig Van Beethoven & Company:

  1. To acknowledge that our lives have equal value & purpose.
  2. To understand that our unique gifts were given to us so we can honor one another by sharing them.
  3. To be present in every moment, and allow my creative genius to connect & collaborate with others and spread the wisdom, joy and deep feelings that we experience.
  4. To accept and commit to the universal love and creativity that inspires our human journey.
  5. To take actions that inspire purposeful positivity, and release more creative bliss in the world.

Listen to the magnificent gravity of Beethoven’s 7th, can you hear his Resolutions resonating through the music? Can you feel the tender mixture of pathos and bliss urging us toward your own epiphany of purpose? If not, I encourage you to seek your own revelatory music, and let it’s transcendent magic unleash your deeply resolute wisdom.

“Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it”
Gautama Buddha

Hail The Conquering Heros

Preston Sturges was the undisputed king of screwball comedy who wrote & directed “Hail the Conquering Hero.” It’s the hilarious WWII story of Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith, the devoted son of a deceased WWI Marine hero who just wants to be like his father, but is discharged because of severe hay fever. Woodrow takes a shipbuilding job in San Diego, but tells his mother that he’s fighting overseas to avoid going home to face her. One day he buys a round of drinks for a group of Marines fresh from Guadalcanal, and meets Master Gunnery Sgt. Heffelfinger, who served with his father in WWI. Woodrow tells Heffelfinger his story, and Heffelfinger comes up with plan to present Woodrow as a hero, so he can reunite with his worried mother. Woodrow refuses, but Heffelfinger insists, and long story short, the lie snowballs, the whole town gets involved, and Woodrow is pushed into running for mayor. In the end, he can’t live with the deception and publicly owns it, and this humble self abasement leads to his election as Mayor – proving that no good deed goes unpunished.

I love this movie because Woodrow is an everyman. Many of us think we have to be ‘Something,’ instead of just ‘Being.’ We allow shame and fear to dictate our actions, and feel guilty when we succeed because we think we’re frauds – even when the real fraud is how small we think we are. Remember, we are The Magnificent, and when we own that truth, we inspire others to do the same.

“Confront the dark parts of yourself, and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness. Your willingness to wrestle with your demons will cause your angels to sing.”
August Wilson

L ife is all about showing up in the moment, and acting on the purpose we’ve chosen to be the expression of our positive beliefs. Why is this expression heroic, after all most of us aren’t running through burning buildings to save lives? Look at it this way, it takes courage to walk through the minefield of all the negative lies that we’ve been taught to believe, especially when they blow up in our faces. And it’s pure heroism to stand tall and own our truth in a way that expands our circle of compassion to include everybody, especially ourselves.

“My purpose: to lift your spirit and to motivate you.”
Mavis Staples

The Power

We’ve explored Quiet Power, Words of Power and Creative Power, so now it’s time to experiment with ‘The Power of Magnificence.’ On a global scale, oppression has taken center stage, and we’ve witnessed an explosion of anger and righteous indignation not seen since the 1960’s. We’ve witnessed the exposure of evils. Been outraged at the chaos it’s unleashed. And been driven to action by the emotions they fueled. Now it’s time to take a beat and think about the future we want to create. This is why I’m behind forming a global ‘Truth & Reconciliation Commission,‘ where we can create a safe space to speak of the oppression we’ve experienced; allow perpetrators to apologize and ask forgiveness; and commit ourselves to reconciliation, because the only way to change an oppressive system that encourages the imbalance of power, is to balance it with our own courage and strength.

“Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”
Desmond Tutu

And how do we deal with self-oppression – the times when we fail to honor our magnificence? Just act on your Quantum Resolutions and put your attention on how they make you ‘feel.’ If your emotions are filling you with positive energy, you’re on the right track. If not, sit quietly, take five deep breaths, listen to your thoughts, and eliminate the negative ones that are blocking your flow. Every revolution begins within us, and it starts with re-coding our negative thoughts & beliefs into positive ones. Trust your feelings, follow your intuition, and seek the energies that resonate with your purpose, because they will help you build a magnificent new reality, one dazzling resolution at a time.

Here are a few concepts to consider as you explore The Power of Magnificence & build your Quantum Resolutions.

1 • Belief – Not the religious variety, but the deep wisdom that tells us whatever we do has value, and that our actions reflect our purpose to create powerful ripples in the great sea of human consciousness.

2 • Wisdom – To make choices that embrace your innate magnificence, and honor that magnificence in others even when they, or you, are experiencing doubt or distress. Suffering always leads to wisdom, if you feel your way through it, because wisdom is the gift of acceptance & awareness.

3 • Truth – To own what is real. To honor the ideals buried under the ideas. To speak out when truth needs a voice, and to open your heart and listen carefully to create a sacred space for healing. Your magnificence knows what is true, let it be your guide.

“Space is not empty. It is full, a plenum as opposed to a vacuum, and is the ground for the existence of everything, including ourselves. The universe is not separate from this cosmic sea of energy.”
David Bohm

Hubble Bubble

What you’re looking at is a dazzling snapshot of our universe courtesy of the Hubble Telescope. Look at the vast array of sizes and colors; a hundred billion galaxies in different states of flux that are telling us a story that reaches back 13.8 billion years. This is the science of The Magnificence, and we can use the same method to focus the powerful lens of our perception to map human experience in a way that shows us who we are, and what we’re here to do.

“You are a function of what the whole universe is doing in the same way that a wave is a function of what the whole ocean is doing.”
Alan W. Watts

I magine that your memories are galaxies, and your experiences the stars that populate them. Approach your inquiry like an astronomer, seeking the knowledge and meaning hidden in your starfield, and seeing the gravity of your connections give birth to the astounding multiverse of your life. Perception is the key. The clearer the image of our lives, the more connections we discover. The more connections we discover, the easier it is to see the new connections we need to make.

“To get the full value of joy you must have someone to divide it with.”
Mark Twain

Memento Mori

Memento Mori asks us to remember that life is fleeting and that we too, shall pass. It’s a call to look at the now with an eye toward the eternal, but also a call to honor the magnificence in all things. You are connected to all of nature, and to the countless generations of beings who focused their priceless energy to help shape it for us to experience. Forget about the daily grind, unless it’s your favorite coffee, and remember the monumental amount of energy that it takes to build a world. Now dedicate a moment of each day to appreciate the commitment that we make to create this Magnificent Life, and give thanks to all those who have passed on their gifts in the belief that they’ve left their legacy in good hands.

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”
Marcel Proust

Deus ex Machina

Have you ever had the experience of seeing through the ordinary and being filled with the transcendent connectivity of all things; of feeling tears running down your cheeks, because your ability to express it pales in the face of all it’s searing beauty? This is what it feels to be Real, this is ‘The Magnificence’ at it’s zenith, the state of being that Sly and the Family Stone are telling you, is “gonna take you higher!” You are the ‘God in the Machine’ who wields a breathtaking consciousness that needs you to share your brilliance, and show the rest of us just how magnificent you are.

“O wonder!
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,
That has such people in’t.”

— William Shakespeare, The Tempest, Act V, Scene I, ll. 203–206[6]

Tag, you’re It!

Your resolutions are a path toward The Magnificence, but your actions are what really make it happen. When you internalize these purposeful agreements, you’re instructing your creative genius to come up with ways to put them into action that are aligned with your unique skills and purpose. Your magnificence is your OS, and no matter which resolution you choose to focus your passionate attention on, it will respond by connecting you with all the resources that you need to bring it to life.

“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion.”
― Martha Graham

Taking Flight

We all have a part to play in the ‘Art of the Now,’ which means we are all creative beings engaged in the monumental task of taking flight and fulfilling our magnificent purpose. I encourage you to embrace the everyday beauty that greets you as you rise into each expansive moment, and soar.
